Description

The Narwana lounge chair is a low leather chair with no arms. The frame is flat iron bar: two lengths on each side curve out from under the seat and cross partway down, so the chair stands on four splayed feet and the floor stays open beneath it. A flat iron platform carries the seat cushion, and an upright behind the back panel holds it at its angle. The leather is stitched into ribs, running up the back panel and across the seat.

The seat sits 42cm off the floor and the back rises to 70.5cm, so this is a chair to sit low and leaned back in rather than upright at a table. The whole chair takes 79cm across and 50.5cm from front to back, which is narrow enough for a pair to face each other across a hearth in a room that will not take a second sofa. With no arms it pulls right up to a low table.

The upholstery is goat leather and the frame is iron. The leather is a by-product of herds kept by local herdsmen, and it is dyed with vegetable extract and tree bark rather than pigment, so the colour enriches as the chair is used and no two start at the same tone. The iron is dark, with a bronzed sheen where the bar has been worked. Narwana also runs to a larger armchair, bar chairs, stools, a foot stool and a desk chair.

Frequently Asked

Does it have arms?

No. The back and the seat are the only upholstered parts, and there is nothing to rest an arm on at either side.

How high is the seat?

42cm off the floor. The seat itself is 45cm wide and 47cm deep.

What leather is used?

Goat leather, a by-product of herds kept by local herdsmen, dyed with vegetable extract and tree bark.

Will the colour change?

Yes. The vegetable dyes mean the tone enriches with time rather than staying as it arrives.

How heavy is it?

13kg.

How do I look after the leather?

Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth. Keep chemicals and household cleaners away from it, and feed the leather now and then with a specialist product, petroleum jelly or flax oil so it does not dry out and crack.
