Description

The Narwana desk chair is a cantilever: the iron frame runs as one continuous line from the floor, forward, up and back under the seat, so there are no back legs and the chair rests on a single bent runner. The seat and the back are tan leather, smooth rather than ribbed, stretched over the frame and left with a worn, uneven surface that runs lighter on the raised parts and darker in the creases. It stands 90cm tall with the seat 49cm from the floor.

At 49cm the seat is at desk and dining height, and at 50cm wide and 48cm deep the chair is narrow enough to push right under a table. The back is upright rather than raked, which suits sitting forward to work at something. With no back legs, the frame meets the floor on a bent runner rather than on four points.

The frame is iron and the upholstery is goat leather. The hide is a by-product of herds kept by local herders, and it is dyed with vegetable extract and tree bark, so the colour goes on enriching with age. The leather is left with a rustic finish, so the grain and the marks in the hide stay visible instead of being evened out. The Narwana range also runs to an armchair, a lounger, bar stools, foot stools and round stools.

Frequently Asked

How high is the seat?

49cm from the floor. The chair is 90cm tall overall.

Will it go under a desk?

It is 50cm wide and 48cm deep, and the cantilever frame has no back legs, so it pushes in close.

What leather is it?

Goat hide, a by-product of herds kept by local herders. It is dyed with vegetable extract and tree bark, so the colour deepens with age.

Is it sold singly?

Yes. This is one chair.

How do I look after the leather?

Take marks off with a soft dry cloth, and keep household cleaners and chemicals away from the surface. Every so often feed the hide with a specialist leather product, or with petroleum jelly or flax oil, which stops it drying out and cracking.
