Description

The Narwana is a backless stool with a ribbed leather seat on an iron frame, standing 75cm to the top of the seat. The seat is a saddle, dipped through the middle and lifted at each end, padded and stitched into ribs that run front to back across the dip. The frame is two lengths of iron rod, each bent into a pair of splayed legs joined by a long loop that rests on the floor, with a curved rail running between them front and back as a footrest.

At 75cm the seat sits at bar height, which is the height for a kitchen island or a high counter rather than for a dining table. The seat measures 51cm across and 40cm front to back, so it is wide enough to sit on sideways. Drawn up to a counter, the footrest rail stays within reach of a foot.

The seat is goat leather, a by-product of herds kept by local herdsmen, and it is dyed with vegetable extract and tree bark, which is why the tan goes on deepening with use instead of staying where it starts. The tone already runs from a light honey to a darker brown across the ribs, and no two panels are quite alike. The iron is left dark and unpainted, worn back to a lighter grey along the bends. The Narwana range also holds a small stool of the same build, and a footstool, a lounger, an armchair and a desk chair in the same leather.
