Our Nara cup is a stoneware cup with a softly uneven body: its sides draw in at a gentle waist and swell again towards the foot, and the rim has a slight wave. The glaze is beige and glossy, running in streaks from the rim downwards, thicker in some places and thinner in others, and it stops just short of the base, where a narrow band of bare clay shows. Made of 100% stoneware, the cup measures 9.5cm across and 8cm tall, and it holds 350ml.

At 350ml this is a generous cup rather than a small one, with room for a large tea, a milky coffee or a hot chocolate on a cold afternoon. The rounded body sits comfortably in two cupped hands, and the open loop handle takes a finger or two, so it suits a slow breakfast at the kitchen table as well as a mid-morning break at a desk.
