Description

The larger Nalgonda base stands 45cm tall and 31cm across at the widest, built from two cones that meet at a raised, uneven rim where the halves are soldered together. The whole body is worked over with fine punched dots in horizontal bands, and the antique brass reads darker inside the marks than on the metal between them, so the surface breaks the light up rather than reflecting it flat. A short punched neck rises from the upper cone to a turned brass collar and a black lampholder.

This is a base only: no shade and no bulb. At 45cm before a shade goes on it is tall for a bedside table and better placed on a sideboard, a console or a wide shelf; the smaller Nalgonda is 33cm tall and 20cm across. It takes one E27 bulb up to 60W, the cord runs 2.5m, the plug is UK and EU, and it is rated IP20 for dry indoor rooms.

The body is iron under an antique brass finish. The dots are punched into the metal rather than printed onto it, which is why the finish catches differently band by band as you move round the base. Neither a shade nor a bulb is included; the Dia jute shade is sold separately.

Frequently Asked

Does it come with a shade?

No. The base is sold on its own, with a brass collar and a black lampholder on top. The Dia jute shade is sold separately.

What is the raised line around the middle?

It is the soldered join between the two halves of the body, left visible rather than filed back, and it runs unevenly round the base.

Is it solid brass?

No. The body is iron, finished in antique brass.

How does it compare with the smaller Nalgonda?

This one is 45cm tall, 31cm across and 1.52kg. The smaller is 33cm tall, 20cm across and 1kg. Same form, same finish.

How do I clean it?

Unplug it, then wipe it over with a soft dry cloth to keep dust out of the punched marks. Keep harsh chemical cleaners off the finish.
