Nadee Small Banana Leaf Lampshade - Natural

The Nadee is a tapered drum woven from banana fibre and lined pale on the inside. The weave is the whole of it: pale stitched threads run vertically at close intervals and the fibre passes horizontally between them, so the surface reads as a fine ribbed grid with the darker grey brown of the leaf showing between the paler stitching. This is the small size, 14.5cm tall and 20cm across.

At 20cm across it fits a small base, a bedside lamp or a squat body, and it is the size that stops a shade overhanging a narrow table. The fibre is dense enough to hold light in and the lining sends most of it downward, so a small Nadee lights a surface rather than glowing all over, and the ribbing shows as a fine texture against the light rather than as an open pattern. It fits a table lamp, a floor lamp or a ceiling pendant.

Banana leaves are processed into a fibre and woven into a fabric before the shade is stitched by hand around a metal frame, so the run of the fibre and the spacing of the stitching differ from shade to shade. The Nadee range runs from small to extra large. No bulb, base or fitting is included.

Which base does the small suit?

A small one. At 20cm across it sits over a bedside lamp or a squat body and little more.

What is banana fibre?

The leaf is processed into a fibre and then woven into a fabric, which is stitched over the frame. It is a by-product of a plant grown for its fruit.

Is it lined?

Yes, pale on the inside, which sends light down onto a surface rather than letting it escape through the weave in every direction.

How do I care for it?

Handle it by the fitting rather than the fabric, and lift dust off the weave with a soft brush or a microfibre cloth.
