Nadee Medium Banana Leaf Lampshade - Natural

The Nadee is a tapered drum woven from banana fibre and lined pale on the inside. Pale stitched threads run vertically at close intervals and the fibre passes horizontally between them, giving a fine ribbed grid with the grey brown of the leaf showing through the paler stitching. This is the medium: 18.5cm tall and 30.5cm across.

Thirty centimetres is the width most ordinary table lamps are built around, so this is the size that will fit a lamp already in the room. The banana fibre sits between a smooth linen and an open jute: it has more texture than the first and holds more light than the second, so a medium Nadee both lights the table under it and shows its own weave when lit. On a clear glass base the texture is the only thing with pattern in the piece; on a turned wooden base the two grains work against each other. It fits a table lamp, a floor lamp or a ceiling pendant. It weighs 0.39kg.

Banana leaves are processed into a fibre and woven into a fabric before the shade is stitched by hand around a metal frame, so the run of the fibre and the spacing of the stitching differ from shade to shade. The Nadee range runs from small to extra large. No bulb, base or fitting is included.

How do I measure for a lampshade?

Measure across the widest part of the base, pick a shade wider than that, then check the height against the bulb so the fitting is hidden at sitting height.

How does it compare with the jute and linen shades?

It sits between them. More texture than a plain linen, denser than an open jute, so it shows its weave when lit without letting light straight through.

Will it fit a ceiling pendant?

How do I care for it?

Handle it by the fitting rather than the fabric, and lift dust off the weave with a soft brush or a microfibre cloth.
