Description

The Naashta is a serving bowl carved from one piece of mango wood, 38cm end to end including the handles and 15.3cm across. The body is an oval trough with a rim that rises along the long sides and dips at the ends, and a short flat handle runs out from each end and finishes in a rounded paddle. The inside is scooped out in facets, so the gouge marks the carver left are still visible across the well. The wood is a warm honey tan with darker grain sweeping through it.

At 38cm long and only 7.5cm deep, this is a shallow bowl for putting food down in front of people rather than for tossing or mixing: bread torn into it, fruit, olives, a handful of tomatoes. The two handles mean it goes to the table full and is carried with both hands rather than gripped round the rim.

The bowl is mango wood and nothing else. It is carved slowly by hand, so the depth of the well, the sweep of the rim and the figure of the grain differ from one bowl to the next. A bowl may carry a short split running in from the rim where the timber has moved. It is food safe. The Naashta bowl is also made in a longer size.

Frequently Asked

How big is it?

38cm end to end, 15.3cm across and 7.5cm high.

Is it food safe?

Yes.

What is it made from?

One piece of mango wood, carved by hand.

Will every bowl look the same?

Not exactly. Each bowl is carved from a different piece of timber, so the grain, the sweep of the rim and any splits in the wood differ.

How do I look after it?

Wash the wood in warm soapy water, rinse it and dry it immediately. The colour will change over time. An edible oil such as olive or walnut rubbed into the surface with a dry cloth will feed and protect it.
