Description

The Mukuni in brass is the same broad saucer as the bronze one in a warmer finish. A small stepped cone at the top takes the flex, and the shade spreads from it into a flattened disc 54.5cm across and 25cm deep, with an open ring at the centre of the underside. In brass the radiating ribs and the open weave catch the light rather than reading as dark lines, so the whole shade lifts instead of silhouetting. It weighs 1.45kg.

At 54.5cm across and only 25cm deep this covers a wide area without dropping far, which suits a dining table or an island in a room where a tall pendant would be in the way. The mesh is open, so the bulb shows through it and the light leaves in every direction as well as down through the ring, throwing the pattern of the weave onto the ceiling. A brass shade does that more visibly than a dark one, because the wire itself is lit. It is made for ceiling use only.

Each shade is woven and shaped by hand over its ribs, so the density of the mesh and the line of the rim differ between them. The Mukuni range also holds this shade in bronze and black, and a taller onion shaped version. No fitting, flex or bulb is included.

Frequently Asked

How is it different from the bronze one?

The finish only. Same saucer, same 54.5cm width. The brass catches the light so the wire itself glows; the bronze reads as a dark silhouette against a lit ceiling.

How low can it hang?

Lower than most shades this wide, because it is only 25cm deep. Over a table, set the rim around 75cm to 90cm above the surface.

Will it hide the bulb?

No. The weave is open, so the bulb is visible and the light passes through the mesh as well as down through the ring below.

Can it go on a table lamp?

No. It is made for ceiling use only.

How do I care for it?

A soft dry cloth or a soft brush, worked gently so the mesh is not pulled out of shape. Keep abrasives and harsh chemicals off the finish.
