Description

A pair of ceramic mugs 10cm tall and 9cm across, holding 300ml each. The body is a straight cylinder that draws in a little towards the base, plain around the top quarter and then cut into broad vertical flutes that run down to a scalloped line just above the foot. The handle is a thin open loop. The glaze is a deep blue that pools almost black in the flutes and at the rim and breaks to a paler speckled blue grey across the ridges and the plain band.

300ml is a standard mug rather than an oversized one, which is a full cup of coffee or tea with room left at the top. The flutes give the outside something for the fingers to catch on, and because the plain band runs from the top of the flutes up to the rim the lip is smooth to drink from. At 10cm they stand low enough to go under a kitchen shelf, and they come in twos.

The mugs are ceramic under a reactive deep blue glaze. The glaze moves during the firing, running thick and dark where it gathers in the flutes and thinning to a speckled grey blue on the ridges, so the two mugs in a single set do not match one another and the pale patches fall in different places on each. The Moda range runs to three mugs of the same shape, this deep blue plus a natural and a pewter.
