Description

Minio is a small ceramic vase with a face, painted by hand in multicoloured stripes. It stands 17cm tall and 7.5cm across, which makes it a bud vase: room for a few stems rather than a full bunch. The top opens into a scalloped rim like a ring of petals, and two rounded bands stack beneath it like a wrapped headdress. Below those sits a face with heavy brows, sleepy eyes, a raised nose, full lips and a little round ear at each side. The foot widens into a striped skirt, so the whole piece reads like a small figure keeping watch over the room.

At this size it settles happily on a windowsill, a bookshelf, a mantelpiece or the corner of a desk, in a living room, hallway or bedroom. At 0.22KG it is light enough to move from shelf to shelf whenever the mood takes you. A few dried grasses or seed heads suit the petal rim and keep the face in view. Inverted, it becomes a candle holder: the striped base end takes a slim dinner candle, so the same piece serves as a vase one day and a candle holder at dinner the next.
