Description

The Milaku is a salt and pepper server carved from a single block of mango wood, 14cm long and 5cm tall. The outline runs as a figure of eight, wide at each end and pinched at the waist, with a round well sunk into each lobe. Two scoop spoons come with it, each one a short round bowl on a flat handle that tapers to a point, and each sits in its own well with the handle resting up against the rim. The sides are left with the facets of the carving on them while the top face is worked smooth.

At 14cm long, 7cm deep and 5cm tall it sits between two settings on a laid table without crowding either, or stays out on a kitchen counter next to the hob. The wells are open, with no lids, so this is seasoning kept to hand rather than put away. A scoop lifts out and lies on the table beside it.

The wood is mango throughout, the two scoops included, and the grain runs across both wells in one piece, so the figuring and the tone differ from server to server. Mango is grown first for its fruit and cut for timber only once the trees have stopped bearing, which is what makes the wood available and gives the farmers a second income from it. Each set arrives in a gift box.

Frequently Asked

How many spoons come with it?

Two, one for each well. Both are mango wood and both are included.

Is it food safe?

Yes. The server and the two scoops are listed as food safe.

How big is it?

14cm long, 7cm deep and 5cm tall, with the two wells sunk into the top face.

Does it come boxed?

Yes. Each set arrives in a gift box.

How do I look after it?

Wash it in warm soapy water, then rinse and dry it straight away rather than leaving it to stand. An edible oil such as olive or walnut rubbed into the surface with a cloth will nourish and protect the wood, though it will darken the tone. The colour will keep changing over time.
