Description

The Mchanga is a wall mirror 72cm across, set in a cast aluminium frame under an antique brass finish. The outline is close to a circle without being one: the edge wanders in and out and the frame runs thicker in some places than others, so the shape reads as something poured rather than turned. The glass sits flush inside the frame, and frame and backing together are 4cm deep.

At 72cm across it covers most of the width of a console table, and it hangs above one with a clear gap between the bottom of the frame and the objects on the table. It weighs 7.78kg and hangs from a single keyhole plate set into the top of the back, so the whole weight goes through one fixing and the levelling is set by where that screw goes. A hallway, a bedroom wall or the space above a chest of drawers all take it at this size.

The frame is sandcast aluminium. Molten metal is poured into a sand mould, which leaves the surface finely pitted and makes the edge slightly different on every one. The antique brass finish sits over that, catching the light on the raised parts and staying dark in the hollows. The back is a solid black board.
