Description

The Mbwa is a wall mirror in a cast aluminium frame, 75cm tall and 36cm wide. The shape is a long rounded oblong: the sides run straight and parallel and the top and bottom close in half circles, so it reads closer to a lozenge than to an ellipse. The frame is a raised half round moulding rather than a flat band, and its surface is pitted and faintly grainy from the casting. The antique brass sits paler on the high points of the moulding and darker in the hollows.

At 75 by 36cm this is a tall narrow mirror, so it suits the wall between two doors, the strip beside a window, or the space above a console where a wider mirror would overrun the furniture. It hangs portrait and only portrait: a single brass keyhole plate is cast into the top of the back, so one screw or hook carries it and the mirror will not turn on its side. It stands 3cm off the wall, and it weighs 6.12kg, which is what that one fixing has to hold.

The frame is aluminium and the glass is plain mirror. Molten aluminium is poured into a sand mould, and the texture across the frame comes from that: the face of a sand casting is never even, and the pitting and the small dips along the moulding differ from one frame to the next. The antique brass is a finish worked over the aluminium rather than the metal underneath. Behind the glass sits a black backing board, held inside the same cast rim, with the hanging plate set into the top of it.

Frequently Asked

How does it hang?

From a single keyhole plate cast into the top of the back, so it takes one screw or hook. It is made to hang portrait and will not work turned on its side.

What is the frame made of?

Aluminium, sand cast, under an antique brass finish. The brass is the finish rather than the metal.

Why is the surface uneven?

It comes out of a sand mould, and a sand casting takes the texture of the mould it was poured into. The frame is pitted rather than polished, and no two are marked the same way.

How much does it weigh, and how far does it stand off the wall?

6.12kg, and 3cm.

How do I clean the glass?

Wipe it with a microfibre cloth in a circular motion. Keep harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners off both the glass and the frame.
