Description

These are four shallow stoneware bowls for the Christmas table, each 16cm across and 5cm tall and holding 535ml. Inside every bowl a goose stands wrapped in a ribbon that reads Merry Christmas, with small stars scattered around it and a wreath and a small leafy sprig near the rim. The outside is quieter: a single band of little hearts and stars runs under the rim of the cream stoneware, so the festive picture only shows itself fully when you look down into the bowl. The finish is painted by hand, so the brushwork varies a little from one bowl to the next.

At 535ml with a low wall, each bowl is a generous size for porridge or cereal on a winter morning or soup in the evening. It works just as well for a helping of Christmas pudding with custard, a dish of nuts or a scoop of trifle. Because there are four, they cover breakfast for a family over the holidays, or a round of desserts after Christmas dinner. The shallow shape makes them easy to pass along a table, and one on a sideboard holding sweets or clementines is a welcome sight as guests arrive.

The bowls are made entirely of stoneware, a dense, hard-wearing ceramic that suits everyday use as well as the festive season. They go in the dishwasher and the microwave, and in the oven too, so a portion of crumble or a baked pudding can go from the oven to the table in its bowl. That makes them practical enough to keep in the cupboard alongside your usual plates rather than packing them away with the decorations. For styling, set one at each place on a linen tablecloth with a few glass tealight holders and a sprig of greenery between them, and let the goose do the talking.
