Description

The Marpha is a cast lamp base shaped like an hourglass drawn out tall: a flared conical foot sweeping up in a long concave curve to a narrow waist, then opening out again into a deep cup at the top. A slim rod rises from the cup to a brass holder and a black lampholder. The surface is matt and faintly granular, which is what sand casting leaves behind, and the antique brass plating sits unevenly across it. It is 42cm tall and 11cm across the foot.

This is a base only: no shade and no bulb. At 42cm tall on an 11cm foot it is a narrow, upright base: it carries height without taking width, which is what makes it workable on a crowded bedside table or a small side table. It takes one E27 bulb up to 40W, the cord runs 2.5m and the plug is UK and EU.

The base is aluminium and iron, sand cast from a hand shaped wax model and then plated in antique brass. It is plated rather than solid, and it weighs 1.28kg. Neither a shade nor a bulb is included.

Does it come with a shade?

No. It is the base only, with a brass holder and a black lampholder on top. Supplied without a shade.

Is it solid brass?

No. It is cast aluminium, plated in antique brass.

How is it made?

Sand cast. A hand shaped wax model forms the mould, molten aluminium is poured in, and the casting is polished by hand before the plating goes on. The faint grain on the surface comes from the sand.

What bulb does it take?

One E27, up to 40W. No bulb is included.

How do I clean it?

Unplug it, then wipe it with a soft dry cloth. Keep harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners off the plating.
