Description
Our Marnia storage jar is made to look like a wrapped Christmas present: a round stoneware body painted by hand in vertical stripes, finished with a lid that carries a bow modelled in green. Stoneware is a dense, hard-fired ceramic with a solid feel in the hand. It stands 16cm tall and 12.5cm across and holds 1390ml, a generous size for a kitchen jar that takes a good batch of biscuits or a bag of sweets without crowding the worktop. The composition is 99% stoneware and 1% silicone, and at 1.06KG it sits firmly where you put it.
Because the maker lists it as suitable for food, it can go straight onto the kitchen counter as a Christmas biscuit jar, filled with gingerbread, shortbread or wrapped chocolates for family and guests to help themselves. It works as well on a sideboard or the dining table through December, where the striped green design sits happily beside a tree, garlands or a festive spread. Filled with treats, it also makes a thoughtful present for a host, a teacher or anyone who loves to bake. And it earns its place after the decorations come down, holding tea bags, sugar or baking cases in the cupboard.
The stripes are painted by hand, and you can see the brush marks along their edges; as with any hand-painted piece, the lines vary slightly from one jar to the next. The lid has a stepped inner rim that sits down inside the opening, and the bow on top gives you something to lift it by. It should not go in the dishwasher, the microwave or the oven, so wash it by hand and let it dry before you refill it. For styling, stand it on a wooden board beside a stack of cookbooks, or group it with sprigs of greenery so the stripes stand out; the styling props shown are not included.
