Description

This is a pair of salt and pepper shakers made to look like two little wrapped presents, each tied with a ribbon and finished with a raised bow on top. They are made of dolomite ceramic and hand painted in a multicoloured Christmas scheme: one is a tall gift box patterned with small dashes, the other a low, wide parcel scattered with dots. The tall shaker is 4.5cm wide, 4.5cm long and 8.5cm tall, and the low one is 6.5cm long, 4cm wide and 5cm tall, so between them they take up very little room on a crowded table.

They are made for the Christmas table. Salt and pepper shake out through the small holes in the top of each box, so they do the everyday job of shakers while looking like part of the festive decoration. They suit a family Christmas lunch, a Boxing Day buffet or a winter dinner party, and they sit happily on a kitchen counter or breakfast table right through December. Because the two pieces are such different shapes, it is easy to remember which holds the salt and which the pepper. Small enough to tuck into a stocking, they also make a cheerful present for anyone who hosts at Christmas.

Each piece is painted by hand, so the dots and dashes carry the slight unevenness of real brushwork, and the surface has a soft gloss.
