Description

A console table, 81cm tall, in white. Overhang decides how it feels to sit or stand at: a top flush with the frame reads neat and gives you nowhere to put your knees, and a little overhang does the opposite. At 118cm wide it is wider than a standard interior door. A console is a shallow table for a place with no room for a deep one — a hallway, behind a sofa, along a landing. Depth is what makes it possible.

Cool tones settle beside grey, blue and black without any effort. Against a warm timber they need something to mediate, or the two simply sit next to each other. A veneered surface gives the look of the timber without its weight or its appetite for humidity. It is not solid wood and does not behave like it — a deep scratch goes through to the board rather than sanding out. Cast and wrought iron are heavy by nature, and that weight is doing a job: it keeps the piece where it is put rather than shifting every time something brushes past. Iron also holds a hand-worked line that a machine-pressed metal cannot. Supplied as a set of 1. 1 shelves.

Everything loosens with use. A yearly check of the fixings takes a minute and is the difference between a piece that stays square and one that develops a lean it never loses. Depth is the whole decision: anything over 40cm starts to obstruct a hallway, and anything under 25cm will not hold a lamp and a bowl side by side.
