Description

A sideboard, 80cm tall, in wood. The top is what the piece is judged on, because it is the part at eye level and the part everything is put down on. A frame can be repaired; a marked top is lived with. At 160cm wide it is wider than a standard interior door. The top is half the value. A long uninterrupted surface at hip height is where lamps, art and everything else ends up.

A dark finish reads as a shape rather than a surface, so the outline does the work and the detail recedes. Against a pale wall that is graphic; against a dark one the piece almost disappears. Cast and wrought iron are heavy by nature, and that weight is doing a job: it keeps the piece where it is put rather than shifting every time something brushes past. Iron also holds a hand-worked line that a machine-pressed metal cannot. Acacia is dense, oily and naturally water-resistant, which is why it turns up on chopping boards and garden furniture alike. The grain is strongly figured, so no two boards read the same.

Furniture fails at the joints and the runners long before the surface wears out, which is why the way a piece is put together matters more than what it is finished with.
