Description

The Malita is a square jewellery box, 25.5cm along each side and 6cm deep, built as a shallow tray in an antique brass frame. The four sides are ribbed glass with a mottled silver mercury finish, and the floor is the same glass left plain. The lid is a single sheet of clear glass in a matching frame, hinged along the back, with a small brass loop at the front to lift it.

The box is made for a dressing table, a chest of drawers or a shelf. Because the lid is clear and the sides are ribbed rather than solid, what is inside shows without the lid being raised. At 6cm deep it takes necklaces laid flat, a row of rings, a watch or a pair of earrings rather than anything stacked, and the inside is one open compartment with no trays or dividers. Closed, the ribbing catches the light along one edge.

The frame is iron under an antique brass finish and the glass is mercury glass, silvered so that it reflects unevenly and reads as aged. The panels are shaped by hand and the ribbing put in before they are set into the frame, so the depth of the ribs and the spread of the silvering differ from box to box. The lid is plain clear glass and carries neither the ribbing nor the silvering.

Is the inside divided into compartments?

No. It is one open tray with no dividers.

What is mercury glass?
