Malia Stoneware Serving Bowl - Cream

The Malia serving bowl is stoneware, 24cm across and 12.3cm deep, under a reactive cream glaze. The wall curves in tightly to a small foot, so the bowl is deep for its width, and the outside carries a band of fine vertical lines painted by hand below the rim. The rim itself is edged in dark brown where the glaze runs thin over the lip.

The bowl holds 3,100ml and it is deep for its width, so it stands taller on a table than a shallow salad bowl of the same span. It serves salad, vegetables or fruit, and it is both dishwasher safe and food safe. The glaze is finished on the outside as well as the inside, so it can stand on an open shelf between meals.

The bowl is stoneware and the glaze is reactive, which means it responds to the heat of the kiln, so the markings and the depth of colour come out differently on every one. The ring of fine lines below the rim is painted by hand. The pieces are made by hand in China using long-established methods. The Malia range runs across the table: dinner and side plates, a breakfast bowl and a smaller bowl, mugs, two jugs, an oval platter, a teapot and a cup and saucer.
