Description

The Mali is a round teapot in terracotta, 14cm tall, 21.5cm from the outside of the handle to the tip of the spout and holding 1000ml. The upper two thirds and the lid are finished in a soft white glaze, and the lower third is left unglazed and ribbed with fine horizontal lines that run right round the body. A band of bare terracotta shows at the edge of the lid and another at the foot. The handle is a wide loop on one side, the spout short and tapered on the other, and the domed lid carries a round knob.

It holds 1000ml and measures 21.5cm across, so it sits on a tray or between two settings rather than taking a whole end of the table. The unglazed band round the base is matt where the glazed body above it is smooth, which gives something to hold on to under the handle when the pot is full. On a wooden table the bare terracotta sits close to the tone of the wood.

The clay is terracotta throughout, glazed above and left bare below. The Mali pottery is made in southern India as part of a fair trade project set up to train and employ men and women from disadvantaged backgrounds, and the scheme now employs forty people. Each piece is fired in a small kiln built from bricks and lit by an open fire, so the glaze pools differently and the ribbing reads deeper on some pots than on others. The slanting jug is made in the same white and terracotta, and the range also runs to ribbed coffee and espresso mugs.
