Description

A pair of small terracotta mugs, each 6cm high, 7cm across and holding 150ml. The top third is glazed a soft off white, inside and out, and the glaze stops in a sharp line; below it the clay is left bare and ribbed, ring after ring, down to the foot. The handle is a small closed loop, sized for a finger or two rather than a whole hand.

At 150ml they hold rather more than a single espresso, and at 6cm high they take up little room on a tray or beside a cafetiere. They go in the dishwasher and the microwave and they are food safe.

The mugs are terracotta, fired in a small kiln built from bricks and lit by an open fire. It is slow work and it leaves every mug slightly its own. They come from a fair trade project set up to train and employ men and women from disadvantaged backgrounds, which now employs forty people and puts particular weight on work for women. Mali also runs to a ribbed coffee mug and a ribbed teapot.
