Description
Two coffee mugs in terracotta, 250ml each, glazed white from the rim down to about a third of the way and left raw below. The unglazed band is cut with fine horizontal ribs that run right round the mug. The glaze carries over the rim and lines the inside, and it runs partway down the handle before it gives out, so the loop is white at the top and bare terracotta where it meets the body. The line where glaze meets clay is not level, and it sits differently on each mug.
Each mug holds 250ml and stands 7.5cm tall by 8cm across the body, a short wide shape rather than a tall one. The ribbed band sits where a hand closes around the mug, and the raw terracotta there is matt and faintly grainy to hold where the glazed top is smooth. The inside is glazed white. The mug is made in two sizes and this is the larger of them; the smaller is an espresso. Two come in the set.
The clay is terracotta throughout, glazed above the line and bare below it, so the colour under the glaze is the colour of the fired clay and not a paint. Mali pottery is fired in a small brick kiln lit by an open fire, in a fair trade workshop in southern India set up to train and employ people from disadvantaged backgrounds, which now employs forty and puts particular weight on work for women. The ribbed mugs sit alongside a teapot in the same two tone treatment. Because every piece is finished by hand, the glaze line and the depth of the ribbing vary between them.

Frequently Asked
How much does each mug hold?
250ml. Two mugs come in the set.
Are they dishwasher safe?
Yes, and they are food safe.
Why is the bottom half a different colour?
It is the same terracotta throughout. The top is glazed white and the ribbed band below it is left unglazed, so what shows there is the fired clay itself.
Will the two mugs match?
Closely, but not exactly. Each one is finished by hand, so the ribbing and the line where the glaze stops vary a little between them.
How do I look after them?
Wash them after every use so they do not stain, using a mild detergent, and do not leave them to soak. Terracotta chips if it is knocked, so handle them with some care.
