Description
The Mali large mug stands 10cm tall and 9cm across, holds 350ml, and two come in a set. The upper part sits under a chalky white glaze that also lines the inside and rolls over the rim; below it the terracotta is left bare, and the change runs along a line that dips and rises around the body rather than sitting level. The handle is a short loop tucked close to the wall, white over the top of the curve and raw clay where it joins low down. The foot narrows and rounds under, so the mug stands on a small circle.
At 10cm tall and 9cm across it is taller than it is wide, so the 350ml sits deep rather than spread out and the body is narrow enough to close a hand around. Two come in a set. The pair stands on a side table beside a sofa. That is the scale of it: a full mug of tea or coffee rather than a small cup.
Terracotta, thrown on a wheel and glazed by hand. Firing happens in a small brick kiln lit by an open fire, which takes time and leaves every mug a little different from the next, so the glaze line sits at its own height on each one and the two in a set will not match. The pottery comes from a fair trade project in southern India set up to train people from disadvantaged backgrounds and give them secure work; forty are employed there now, with particular weight put on employing women. Alongside this mug the range runs to a coffee mug, two ribbed mugs in coffee and espresso sizes, a slanting jug and a ribbed teapot.

Frequently Asked
What does each mug hold?
350ml, in a mug 10cm tall.
Is it sold as a pair?
Yes. Two mugs come in a set.
Why is the lower band a different colour?
It is the terracotta the mug is thrown from, left without glaze. The white covers the inside and the upper part of the body only.
Are they dishwasher safe?
Yes, and they are food safe.
How do I look after them?
Wash them after each use so they do not stain, using a mild detergent, and do not leave them soaking. The rim will chip if it is knocked.
