Description

A pair of terracotta mugs, each 10cm tall and 9cm across, holding 400ml. The forest green glaze is taken over the top two thirds of the mug and stops in an uneven line around the body, leaving the bare red clay showing below it and right round the foot. The glaze gathers thicker towards that line and thins at the rim, so the green runs from near black at the bottom to a paler sage at the top of the same mug. The handle is a plain loop, glazed to match.

400ml is a full mug rather than a cup, enough for a large coffee or a tea with room left for milk. The walls are thick and the base is solid, so there is weight in the hand whether the mug is full or empty, and the bare clay band gives the fingers something matt to hold against the glaze above it. Two come in a set.

The mugs are terracotta, made by hand by potters in southern India and dipped in the green glaze before firing. Firing is done in small brick kilns over open flames, so the heat is never quite even and the glaze comes out at a different depth and a different line on every mug. The range is made under a fair-trade arrangement that holds steady work in the makers own community.
