Description
The Mali coffee mug is thrown from terracotta and comes as a pair, each mug 8cm tall and holding 350ml. Each one has been dipped mouth first into an off-white glaze, which covers the inside, the rim and the upper two thirds of the body before stopping in a line that wavers rather than running level. Below that line the clay is left bare, a dry red brown carrying the rings left by the potter at the wheel. The dip crosses the handle as well, so the top of the loop is white and the underside is raw clay.
The mug is squat, 8cm tall and 9.5cm across, so it is wider than it is high, with a wide mouth and walls that curve down to a narrow foot. It stands low and steady on a table or a tray. At 350ml it holds a full mug of coffee rather than a small cup. Two come in a set, and the Mali range runs on to a large mug, a ribbed coffee mug, a ribbed espresso mug, a slanting jug and a ribbed teapot.
The mugs are terracotta, thrown and dipped by hand, then fired in a small kiln built from bricks and lit by an open fire. The glaze line therefore sits at a different height on every mug and the two in a set will not match exactly. The pottery is made in southern India as part of a fair trade project set up to train and employ men and women from disadvantaged backgrounds, and the scheme now employs forty people.

Frequently Asked
How much does each mug hold?
350ml.
How many mugs come in a set?
Two.
Why is the lower part of the mug unglazed?
The mug is dipped rather than painted, so the glaze covers the inside, the rim and the upper part of the body and stops where the dip ended. The bare band below it is the terracotta the mug is thrown from.
Are they dishwasher safe?
Yes, and they are food safe.
How do I look after them?
Wash them after every use to stop them staining. Use a mild detergent and do not leave them to soak. Handle them carefully, because the rim will chip.
