Description

A five-pointed star carved from travertine, standing on a plinth of the same stone over a solid brass plate from which a hook curves out and down. The star is faceted rather than flat: a ridge runs from the centre out to each point, so the faces take the light at different angles and the shape reads as folded. The stone is a creamy beige, open-pored and pitted, with veining running through it. The whole piece is 20cm tall, 13cm wide and 10cm deep, and weighs 1.63kg.

At 1.63kg the holder is heavy for its size, and it stands on a mantelpiece or a shelf with the brass hook projecting over the front edge. Nothing is fixed to the wall and nothing is screwed down: it stands where it is put and comes away again after Christmas. It is for indoor use.

Each star is carved by hand from a single block of travertine, a stone laid down over thousands of years, so the veining and the run of the open pores differ on every one and no two are alike. The star and the plinth under it are the same stone; the brass plate below is a separate piece the stone sits on, and the hook is drawn off its front face. The brass is solid and its tone reads against the stone rather than matching it. The stocking is not included.
