Description

A large round tray in aluminium, 54.5cm across and 2cm deep, finished in black. The face is etched by hand with concentric rings that run out from a dense spiral at the centre, the lines fine and close set near the middle and opening as they travel towards the rim. The rim turns up into a shallow lip the whole way round. The surface is textured rather than polished, so the black holds a low sheen instead of a reflection.

At 54.5cm this is a tray for carrying several things at once, or for leaving out on an ottoman or a low table with glasses and a candle standing on it. It is food safe and made for dry food, so it takes bread, fruit or a board of cheese rather than anything wet. Stood on edge against a wall is the other way the size works: upright, the etched face reads as a disc rather than as a tray.

The tray is aluminium throughout. The pattern is cut by hand with traditional tools, so the spacing of the rings and the depth of each line vary from one tray to the next. A smaller Mahika is made at 40.5cm across, and the large size is made in antique brass as well as black.
