Description

The small Lumbu is a flattened metal cushion, 27cm across and 24.5cm tall, wider than it is high and drawn in at the top to a short neck. The whole surface is punched with small dots set in close rows, so the metal reads as texture rather than as a smooth skin, and a seam runs right round the widest point where the two halves meet. The finish is antique brass, darker in the punched hollows and brighter on the ground between them. A brass collar sits on the neck with a black lampholder above it, and the cord is black fabric.

This is a base only: no shade and no bulb. At 4.44kg it is heavy for its size, which is what a wide low base needs to stay put under a shade, and the 27cm width carries a broad shade better than a narrow one. It suits a side table or a sideboard where the base is seen at close range and the punching is worth seeing. It takes one E27 bulb up to 60W, the cord runs 2.5m, and it is rated IP20 for dry indoor rooms.

The base is aluminium finished in antique brass, and the punching is done by hand, so the rows wander slightly and no two bases carry the same pattern. The Lumbu range also holds a large version of the same cushion, 40cm across. Neither a shade nor a bulb is included.

How is it different from the large Lumbu?

The large is 40cm across and 30cm tall against 27cm and 24.5cm here, and 7.35kg against 4.44kg. The shape and the punched finish are the same.

Why is there a seam round the middle?

The cushion is made in two halves and joined at the widest point. The seam is left visible and runs right round.

How do I clean it?

Unplug it, then wipe it with a soft dry cloth. Keep harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners off the finish.
