Description

The small Lucia is a round vase, 17.5cm tall and 15cm across, that swells out from a narrow foot and draws in to a short neck with a small round mouth. Broad strokes of warm terracotta glaze are brushed up the body and stop in a scalloped line, leaving a speckled cream band around the base. At the shoulder the glaze breaks into a pale crusted band that runs down over the terracotta in places. The surface is glossy and the brush marks stay visible under it.

The mouth is narrow, so this takes a few stems rather than a bunch: a short spray of eucalyptus, a handful of dried grasses, or three or four garden flowers cut low. At 17.5cm it stays below eye level on a shelf or a mantelpiece, and on a dining table it sits under the line of sight across it. The inside carries a double layer of glaze, so it holds water and will take fresh flowers as readily as dried ones.

The vase is ceramic and is glazed by hand in Portugal, so the scalloped line falls at a different height on every one and the crusted band at the shoulder spreads differently. Lucia is made in two sizes. This is the small at 17.5cm; the large is 23cm and is a narrower bottle shape rather than the same vase scaled up, so the two read as a pair rather than a repeat.
