Lucia Large Ceramic Vase - Terracotta Mix

The Lucia is a bottle shaped vase, 23cm tall and 14cm across. The body swells out from a narrow foot to its widest point about two thirds of the way up, then draws in sharply to a short neck with a rolled lip. The glaze is laid on in broad blocks that run down the body, a rust terracotta, a soft peach and a sand buff, each stopping at a different height over a speckled off white ground that shows through at the base.

The neck is narrow, so a few stems stand upright in it rather than falling open the way they would in a wide mouth. The inside carries a double layer of glaze and holds water, which means fresh flowers and not only dried ones. It stands on a shelf and holds cut eucalyptus. It is for indoor use.

The vase is ceramic, thrown in Portugal to techniques that have been used there for centuries, and the process rests on the judgement of the potter rather than on a mould. Every piece is glazed by hand, so the blocks of colour fall at different heights and no two vases carry the same arrangement. The Lucia comes in two sizes, this large one at 23cm and a small at 17.5cm.

How do I look after it?

Wipe it with a soft damp cloth, or wash it in warm soapy water. Keep harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners away from the glaze, and use it indoors only.
