Description

Square-cut clear crystal is held in a polished chrome frame, with a black shade above softening the light into something warm rather than sparkly. The crystal still does its work: it picks up daylight and lamplight from around the room, so the base has presence even when the lamp is off. An inline switch on the flex puts control at hand height, with no reaching up under the shade to find a rocker.

At around 49cm tall it settles well on a bedside table of reasonable depth, a hall console, a sideboard or a desk corner where you want a pool of light rather than glare. This is ambient light for evening rooms, and it flatters darker paint and timber. We would fit an LED GLS lamp with an E27 cap and keep to 20W or under, which is plenty behind a shade of this size. With a dimmable lamp and a matching dimmer it will drop to a low glow for late nights, and it looks right flanking a bed or bracketing a mirror.

The metalwork is chrome plated and polished, the crystal is clear and faceted, and the shade is fabric in black with a pale lining that bounces light down onto the surface below. For upkeep, a dry lint-free cloth lifts fingermarks from the chrome, a soft brush sees to dust on the shade, and the crystal repays an occasional buff to bring back its clarity. Keep it to dry rooms indoors and away from steam and splashes, and plug it into a socket where the flex can run tidily without being trodden on. It carries a one year warranty. We like it in a modern scheme where the metal picks up other chrome or nickel fittings. Lamps are not included.
