Description

A round dining table, 120cm across and 76cm high, with the top made up from mango wood boards laid side by side and the base turned from one heavy column. The base runs from a wide stepped disc at the floor up through a deep bulb, narrows into a neck and opens out again under the top. Everything is left raw rather than stained, so the grain and the knots read straight off the surface and the tone shifts from board to board across the top.

At 120cm across it seats four, and because the base is a single pedestal rather than four legs there is nothing for a knee to meet, so a chair pulls in anywhere around the edge. Allowing a metre all round for chairs to push back puts it in a room of about 3.2m across. At 56.2kg it is a two person lift, and almost all of that weight sits in the base.

The top is mango wood, made up from boards chosen so their tones sit together, and the base is hand-turned from the same timber. Mango trees are planted for fruit and felled only once they stop bearing, so the boards are a second use for a tree that has already done its first job. Nothing has been added to even out the colour, so the table will darken and shift in tone with use. The same table is made at a larger size, and the Laya range also runs to a side table and a coffee table on the same carved base.

Frequently Asked

How many does it seat?

Four.

How big is it?

120cm across and 76cm high.

Is there a larger size?

Yes. The same table is made in a large.

What is the base like?

A single turned pedestal on a wide stepped foot, hand-turned from mango wood, so there are no legs at the corners to sit around.

How do I look after it?

Wash mango wood in warm soapy water, then rinse and dry it immediately. Mango is a tropical timber and can dry out in a centrally heated room, which may cause cracking or warping, so feed it with a natural oil such as olive or walnut applied with a soft cloth. Those oils sit on the surface rather than soaking in, so they need reapplying after washing, and they may darken the tone. Use coasters under drinks, because the finish can mark where it meets a hot drink or a liquid, and blot any spillage immediately with a dry cloth. Do not use chemical cleaners.
