Description

The Laya is a round dining table 150cm across and 76cm high. The top is a plain disc built up from mango wood boards laid side by side, the joints and the knots left showing under a bare finish and the edge simply rounded off rather than moulded. It stands on one central pedestal, turned from a narrow neck out to a wide bulb, back in through a waist and down onto a stepped round plinth.

A top of 150cm seats six. There are no corner legs, so a chair can be drawn up anywhere round the rim rather than only in the gaps, and the plinth sits far enough inside the edge that knees do not meet it. A round table wants clear floor on every side: it is the shape that reads worst pushed against a wall.

The wood is mango throughout. The top is made up from several boards chosen to sit together in tone, so the colour shifts a little across the width, and the base is turned on a lathe rather than cut. Mango is grown first for its fruit and felled for timber only once the trees stop bearing. The Laya range also runs to a smaller round dining table, a coffee table and a side table.

The oil will darken the tone. Use coasters and blot any spill at once, because hot drinks and standing liquid will mark the finish.
