Description

Our Latina side plate is made of stoneware in a soft cream. A fluted border runs right round the plate and finishes in a gently scalloped edge. The centre is smooth and flat, giving a clear, even space for food, while the ribs around it catch the light. At 20cm across and 2cm tall it is a true side plate size: large enough for a slice of toast, a croissant or a wedge of cake, yet small enough to sit beside a dinner plate without crowding the table. It weighs 0.42KG.

This is the plate we would set out at breakfast and teatime: toast and marmalade, a scone with jam, biscuits beside a pot of tea. It works as a starter or dessert plate at a dinner party, and as a bread plate laid to the left of each main setting. The cream glaze is quiet enough to sit happily with wood, linen and woven placemats, and it lets the colours of the food shine, from ripe figs to a slice of lemon tart. It suits a kitchen table in daily use just as well as a table laid for guests.

Stoneware is a dense, hard-wearing ceramic fired at high temperature, which is why it is so often chosen for everyday tableware. Ours is finished in a solid coloured glaze. The plate goes in the dishwasher, can go in the microwave to warm a pastry or a small portion, and can go in the oven, so you can warm it before serving.
