Description

These are small stoneware bowls, sold as a set of six, each 9cm across and 5cm tall with a capacity of 165ml. That makes them a dip or condiment bowl rather than a cereal bowl: big enough for a generous spoonful of hummus or a handful of nuts, small enough to line several along one board. The sides are fluted from foot to rim, and the green glaze gathers in the grooves and thins on the ridges, so each bowl catches the light in soft vertical bands. Around the rim there is a fine line where the glaze breaks over the edge, a small detail that gives the plain shape some depth.

Put them out wherever small things get shared: olives and almonds with drinks, salsa and guacamole on a taco night, soy sauce and pickled ginger beside a sushi supper, or salt and pepper next to the hob. At breakfast they hold jam, butter or a spoonful of yoghurt; after dinner, a scoop of sorbet or a few chocolates. Six bowls give one for each place at a table of six, or enough for a mezze spread down the middle. The muted green sits comfortably with plain plates, natural linen and wood.

The bowls are 100% stoneware under a solid coloured glaze. Stoneware is fired hard and dense, which makes it a sturdy material for daily use, and it holds warmth well. They go in the dishwasher, the microwave and the oven, so you can warm a dip, bake a small portion or reheat leftovers in the same bowl that goes to the table, then clear everything into the dishwasher afterwards. We like them grouped on a wooden board in the centre of the table, each filled with something different, and let the green glaze and the fluting do the decorating.
