Description

A set of four round coasters, 10cm across and 1cm thick, plaited from dried water hyacinth. Each one is coiled from the middle outwards in a tight spiral of flattened, braided stems, with a plainer band worked round the outside as a border. The dried stems take different shades, from pale straw to a mid brown, and they are set so that the changes read as blocks of tone rather than an even wash.

At 10cm across they take a tumbler, the foot of a wine glass or a mug, and the 1cm thickness lifts the base clear of the table. Four is enough for a small table or for the corners of a tray on a larger one, and they stack flat when they are not out. The tone varies from one coaster to the next, so a set of four does not read as four of the same thing.

They are woven from water hyacinth by makers in Vietnam. Water hyacinth is a river weed there and an unwelcome one that chokes the waterways, so what goes into these is a nuisance plant put to use. The Lam range also holds round and rectangular tablemats in the same weave. These come in a set of four.
