Description

A set of four table mats woven from water hyacinth, each 46cm by 35cm and a centimetre thick. The outline is a rectangle with the corners rounded right off, so the edge curves rather than turning. The weave runs as a series of concentric rings, a braided outer border working inwards ring by ring to a small oval at the centre, and because the dried stems vary from pale straw to a mid brown the rings read as a pattern rather than as a plain field.

Forty six by thirty five centimetres takes a dinner plate with room either side for cutlery and a glass. Four set a table for four. At a centimetre thick the set stacks down to almost nothing in a drawer, and the rounded outline leaves no corner to catch on as they are pulled out.

The material is water hyacinth, a river weed and an unwelcome one in the waterways of Vietnam, where the mats are woven. Cutting and drying it turns a nuisance in the water into the material for the mat. Nothing is dyed: all the colour across a mat is the natural variation in the stems, so the four in a set will not repeat one another. The Lam range also runs to a round mat and a set of coasters.
