Description

The Kubo planter stands 20cm tall and 19cm across, with straight sides that angle in at the shoulder to a plain collar and a flat rim. The lower two thirds is combed with fine vertical lines cut into the clay, close together and uneven in depth. A reactive glaze sits over a sandy body, gathering white in the grooves and along the shoulder line and thinning to a warmer tone in between, so the colour shifts round the pot.

The opening is 15cm across, a little narrower than the body. The planter has drainage holes and is made for outdoors as well as indoors, and a stopper comes with it for the hole when it stands inside. Outdoors it stands among low planting beside the larger of the two sizes, and both can be planted directly rather than holding a nursery pot.

The planter is ceramic, made in small batches in a country with a long ceramic tradition of its own. Because the glaze is reactive no two come out the same: the speckling, the run of the white and the depth of the sandy tone all vary. Kubo runs to two sizes, and both are made in terracotta as well as this cream.
