Description

The Konali is a floor lamp base whose column is turned as a stack of long ovals, each one swelling and narrowing again, one above the next from the foot to the brass collar at the top. The foot is a plain round disc 30cm across. The ash stain leaves the mango wood grey brown rather than golden, with the grain running pale through the darker surface, and the flex is rust coloured braid with a switch on the cord. It stands 137cm to the lampholder.

A column made of repeated shapes reads as a rhythm from across a room, which is the difference between this and a plain turned shaft. At 137cm the lampholder sits above the head of anyone seated beside it, so the bulb is hidden from a chair and the light comes down through the shade rather than out at a face. That suits the side of an armchair or the end of a sofa. It takes one E27 bulb up to 60W, the flex runs 3.5m, and it is rated IP20 for dry indoor rooms. The plug is UK fitting.

Mango is a fast growing hardwood and a by-product of fruit growing. Each column is turned by hand before the stain goes on, so the ovals differ slightly in length from one base to the next and the stain sits deeper where the grain is open. The Konali range also holds a table lamp base turned the same way. No shade and no bulb are included.

Frequently Asked

Does a shade come with it?

No, this is the base alone. A large shade suits the 137cm height and the 30cm foot.

Does it come with a UK plug?

Yes, and only a UK one. Some of the other floor lamps here are fitted for UK and EU; this one is not.

Will every column look the same?

No. Each is turned by hand, so the ovals vary a little in length and the ash stain takes more deeply wherever the grain is open.

How do I care for the wood?

Wipe it regularly with a dry soft cloth. Mango wood can be fed with a natural oil such as olive or walnut applied on a cloth, which nourishes it but will darken the tone and has to be put back if it is washed off.
