Description
The Knightsbridge Smart Wi-Fi Dimmer Module is a retrofit dimming control designed for installation behind an existing wall switch, converting traditional lighting circuits to smart control without requiring a neutral wire connection. The module fits in a standard UK back box with a minimum 35mm depth and supports 5-100W dimmable LED loads, 10-200W incandescent, and 10-200W halogen. The unit connects via Wi-Fi (2.4GHz only) and Bluetooth LE for app-based control through the SmartKnight or SmartLife apps.
Designed for homes where rewiring to add a neutral wire at the switch position is impractical or impossible, the module installs between the existing switch and the lighting circuit. It works with standard toggle switches for on/off control and pairs with retractive (push-button) switches for two-way or three-way dimming setups. Voice control through Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Siri Shortcuts allows hands-free operation, while scheduling and scene automation can be configured through the app interface.
The module defaults to trailing-edge dimming technology but can be switched to leading-edge mode via the app to suit different lamp types and eliminate flicker with certain dimmable LEDs. The app interface also allows adjustment of the dimming curve, minimum brightness level and ramp rate to fine-tune behaviour with specific fittings. The purple polycarbonate housing measures 65mm x 25mm x 40mm and carries IP20 rating for internal dry-location installation only. Overload and overheat protection are built in, and the module requires a minimum 5W load to function correctly.
Installation requires competent electrical knowledge and should be carried out by a qualified electrician. The module connects to live and switched-live wires only (no neutral), making it suitable for older UK wiring configurations where only two cores run to the switch position. For optimum wireless performance, install within 10m of the Wi-Fi access point or router. The manufacturer recommends checking lamp compatibility before installation, particularly with low-wattage dimmable LEDs where performance may vary between brands.

Frequently Asked
Why does this module not require a neutral wire?
The module is designed for UK wiring configurations where only live and switched-live wires run to the switch position. It draws a small standing current through the lamp circuit to power itself, which is why it requires a minimum 5W load to function correctly. This makes it suitable for retrofit installations in older properties without the need to rewire.
Can this work with my existing dimmer switch?
No. The module replaces the existing dimmer and should be paired with a standard on/off toggle switch or a retractive (push-button) switch. Only one rotary dimmer can be connected in the circuit. For two-way or three-way dimming, use retractive switches at the second and third positions, with dimming controlled by holding the button or via the app.
What happens if my lamp flickers?
Flicker can occur with certain dimmable LED lamps, particularly lower-quality models or those below 5W. The app allows you to switch between trailing-edge (default) and leading-edge dimming modes, adjust the dimming curve, and set the minimum brightness level to eliminate flicker with most lamps. Check lamp compatibility with the manufacturer before installation.
Does it work with non-dimmable lamps?
No. The module is not suitable for use with non-dimmable lamps or fittings. Using it with non-dimmable LEDs may result in flicker, lamp failure or damage to the module. Only use with lamps explicitly marked as dimmable and rated at a minimum of 5W.
