Description

The Kirindi is a two tier chandelier 47cm across and 35.5cm deep, built from flat clear glass panes set into a brass frame like small windows. The panes are not a regular grid: rectangles of several sizes sit against each other brick fashion around both tiers. A narrower drum sits inside the outer one and is visible through it, so the eye reads two layers of glazing at once. Three bulbs sit on a brass cross bar at the centre, in plain sight through the panes. It hangs on a brass chain with a black flex running alongside.

Everything here is clear glass, so the fitting is looked at rather than looked past, and the bulbs are part of what is on show. That suits a hallway, or a dining table where it is seen across at seated height, or a stairwell where it is passed at close range. Light from the three bulbs crosses the inner ring of panes and then the outer, so it is broken twice before it reaches the room. It takes three E27 bulbs, each up to 40W, and the flex runs 1.7m. At 6.68kg it needs a fixing into a joist or a mount rated for the weight.

The glass is recycled, mouth blown and then formed into panes, which leaves small irregularities in each one. The frame is made by hand from iron under an antique brass finish, so the colour is a surface over a different metal. The chain and bulb holders are brass to match it. The fitting is rated IP20, for dry indoor rooms. Bulbs are not included.

What ceiling fixing does 6.68kg need?

A fixing into a joist, or a mount rated for the weight. A plasterboard anchor on its own isn't enough, and it's worth settling before the chandelier arrives.

Per bulb. It takes three E27s and each can go up to 40W.

Why two tiers?

Light passes through the inner ring of panes and then the outer, so it's broken twice. A single tier gives a flatter, brighter result.

How do I clean the panes?

Switch the light off and let it cool, then use a soft dry microfibre cloth in a circular motion. Don't use harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners or hot soapy water.
