Description

The Kijang is a jewellery box 15cm wide, 9cm deep and 6.5cm high, built as a metal frame with clear glass in all four sides and a mirror set into the base. The lid is a sheet pierced right through in a geometric lattice: concentric rosettes at the centre, a field of small repeating shapes around them and a border worked in the same. It hinges at the back and hooks shut on a catch at the front. Inside, glass partitions divide the box into three, one long compartment and two smaller ones.

At 15 by 9cm it holds what a dressing table collects rather than a whole drawer of jewellery: rings and studs in the two small compartments, a chain or a bangle laid out flat in the long one. The sides are glass and the base is a mirror, so what is inside shows without the lid being lifted, and the piercing lets light down onto it from above. At 6.5cm high it takes up very little of a surface, and it stands on a dressing table beside the larger Kijang box.

The frame is iron under a brass finish and the panels are recycled glass. The lattice is laser cut, which is what allows the pattern to be as fine as it is, and each box is then put together by hand, panel by panel, so the metal around the edges sits a little differently on every one. A larger Kijang box is made at 30 by 18cm.
