Description

The Khila is a straight sided vase 37cm tall and 14cm across, a clear glass cylinder set into a metal sleeve that covers the lower part of it. The glass is mouth blown, so the walls ripple and the light bends through them in places rather than running flat, and the mouth is cut straight across at the full width. The sleeve is hand bent metal under an antique brass finish, mottled dark and light with a fine brushed grain running through it.

The opening is as wide as the vase itself, so a loose armful of stems goes straight in and falls open rather than being held upright by a narrow neck. At 37cm it takes long stems without cutting them down, and the sleeve covers the bottom of them, so the water line and the tangle of stems at the base stay out of sight. It stands on a console, a mantelpiece or a dining table.

The glass is recycled. Waste glass is collected and washed to remove impurities, then crushed, melted down and mouth blown into a mould, so the thickness of the wall and the run of the ripple differ from vase to vase. The sleeve is iron, bent by hand in India using traditional methods and then given its antique brass finish, which sits darker in the hollows and brighter where the metal has been worked.

Frequently Asked

How tall is it?

37cm, and 14cm across.

How wide is the opening?

The full 14cm. It is a straight cylinder with no neck.

What is the base made of?

Iron, under an antique brass finish. The glass sits inside it.

Will every vase look the same?

No. The glass is mouth blown into a mould and the metal is bent by hand, so the ripple in the glass and the mottling in the brass differ from one to the next.

How do I look after it?

Wipe it regularly with a soft damp cloth. To wash it, hand wash only with a mild dish soap and do not leave it to soak. Dry it immediately so that the metal does not rust. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners. Indoor use only.
