Keso Woven Coasters - Brown - Set of 4

A set of four round coasters, each 11cm across and 1cm thick. Every one is built from a single rope of banana leaf fibre coiled in a spiral out from the centre and stitched to the turn beside it as it goes, so the face of the coaster is a set of concentric rings and the rim is the last coil bound off. The fibre is brown, but it runs from pale straw to a darker tan within one coaster, so the rings read as faint banding rather than a flat colour.

11cm gives a mug or a tumbler room around its base rather than balancing it on the edge, and the 1cm thickness lifts a wet base clear of the table underneath. The whole set weighs 80 grams, so they stack into a drawer or sit out on a table without taking up any real depth, and the coiled surface grips a glass rather than letting it slide. They are made as an everyday set of four rather than a pair, which covers a table laid for four without breaking into the cupboard.

The fibre is banana leaf, taken from fruit-growing fields where the leaves were treated as waste once the crop was in, and worked with jute. Each coaster is coiled by hand, so the spacing of the rings and the run of the colour differ across the four in a set. Keso is also made as placemats, and the coasters are made in natural as well as brown.
