Description

Four round placemats, each 35cm across and 1cm thick, handwoven from banana leaf fibre in a coil that spirals out from the centre to the edge. The colour is the fibre itself, a warm light brown that runs paler and darker along the coil, and the rope is left standing so the surface reads as fine ridges rather than as a flat sheet.

At 35cm across each mat takes a dinner plate with a border of mat showing round it, and four of them lay a table for four. Round table mats sit under a round plate without a corner left over. All four together weigh 0.72kg, so they stack away in a drawer. Colours fade in direct sunlight, so a table that sits in a window will lighten over time.

The fibre is banana leaf, taken from the leaves of banana trees in fruit-growing fields where they would once have been treated as waste, worked together with jute. Each mat is woven by hand, so the coil closes differently on every one. The same weave is also made as coasters, and both are made in natural as well as in brown.
