Kayo Mango Wood Table Lamp Base - Natural

The Kayo is a large turned table lamp base in mango wood, 54cm tall and 37cm across at its widest. The form is a rounded vessel that draws in to a short neck, and it is built from horizontal staves, so the joins run round the body as visible bands and the grain, colour and knots change from one band to the next. A brass collar and lampholder sit on the neck.

At 54cm before a shade goes on, this is a base for a console, a sideboard or a wide side table rather than a narrow bedside one, and the 37cm width needs the surface to carry it. The pale wood reads warm against dark timber and against painted furniture. It takes one E27 bulb up to 60W. The flex runs 2.5m to a UK adaptor. At 7.2kg it stays where it is put.

Mango wood is a hardwood that turns cleanly, and the staves are glued up before the body is turned, which is why the banding shows. Every base takes the grain it is given, so no two match. This is sold as a base, so no shade and no bulb are included.

Why is the grain uneven across the base?

The body is built from horizontal staves of mango wood, glued up before the shape is turned. The join lines run round it as bands, and the grain, colour and knots change from one band to the next.

What surface does it need?

One that takes 37cm of width and 7.2kg of weight. A sideboard or a console suits it; a narrow hall table doesn't.

What shade should I choose?

A generous one. On a base this wide a small shade looks perched, and the proportions work against you.

How do I look after it?

Unplug it and wipe with a soft dry cloth. Don't use abrasive materials or harsh chemicals, as they'll damage the finish.
