Description

A round wooden board 20cm across and 5cm tall, cut from a single piece and raised clear of the table on short feet carved from the same block. The top is flat and worn smooth towards the middle, with an old split running most of the way across it and a shallow hollow where it has been used. The rim is left rough, with saw and tool marks round the whole edge, and the tone runs from pale honey to a darker brown where the wood has weathered.

The feet hold the board clear of the surface, so it stands rather than lying flat. At 20cm across it takes a round cheese, a small loaf, a candle or a short stack of bowls, and raises whatever sits on it above the level of the table.

Each board is a reclaimed chakla, the round platform used in Indian kitchens for kneading and rolling dough. The wide smooth top is what it was made for, giving an even, thin sheet for rotis and parathas, and the wear on the surface is the work it already did. Because every one comes out of a different kitchen, the split, the hollow and the colour of the wood differ from board to board. The Kaveeta range also holds a longer, oblong serving board.

Frequently Asked

What is a chakla?

The round wooden platform used in Indian kitchens for kneading and rolling dough. Each of these boards is a reclaimed one.

Will every board look the same?

Not exactly. Every board comes out of a different kitchen, so the split, the wear and the colour of the wood differ from one to the next.

How big is it?

20cm across and 5cm tall.

Is it one board or a pair?

One board.

How do I look after it?

Wash it in warm soapy water, then rinse and dry it straight away rather than leaving it to soak. An edible oil such as olive or walnut rubbed into the surface with a dry cloth will feed the wood. The colour will change over time.
